Surveying camera traps is always an adventure, a thrilling moment that oscillates between great joy and disappointment, depending on our expectations and hopes. Of course, we want to see the wolf on screen, to observe him, but above all to feed our data, which is vital for our project.
That day, as we set out to survey some of our cameras, we hoped to find a video in the most prolific locations, those strategic spots that had been studied for a long period of time. Sunshine, mild spring temperatures, some scent of the forest and an enchanting setting were there to accompany us along the way.
As we were watching the recorded videos, the fever's got us : a female sub-adult from Arsene's pack decided to offer us a daytime appearance, posing for a while. She gave us time to observe her, sniffing the ground, picking up the scents of the deers that frequently use this path, as the video below will show you.
You can admire the deep, fascinating gaze of this young female wolf, who was alone and maybe on an excursion. She has also been seen stealthily on two other camera traps, always alone, except once, when she joined her parents. We called her "Ella".
